LEED: Setting Standards for Building Green
Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) is a program enacted by the U.S. Green Building Council to set standards for developing environmentally responsible buildings, and to educate and certify professionals with expertise in sustainable building. The LEED Green Building Rating System® is universally acknowledged as the benchmark for assessing and grading the sustainability of building projects, including new commercial construction, residential, renovations and more. The LEED Professional Accreditation program enables architects, engineers, project managers and other building professionals to demonstrate their knowledge and command of green building and design principles, and LEED credentials are awarded only to those professionals who successfully complete a comprehensive exam. The USGBC currently maintains LEED standards for the following types of building projects:
- LEED-NC: New commercial construction and major renovation projects
- LEED-EB: Existing building operations
- LEED-CI: Commercial interiors projects
- LEED-CS: Core and shell projects
- LEED-H: Homes
- LEED-ND: Neighborhood development
- LEED Application Guides: Retail (currently in pilot), Multiple Buildings/Campuses, Schools, Healthcare, Laboratories, Lodging
